You could win a Fender Stratocaster HSS Guitar, courtesy of Full Sail University and Fender Guitars. You need to enter by February 22, 2010 to get your chance to win this rock machine.

The Fender Stratocaster HSS, aka the "Fat Strat", is the same classic design as the Stratocaster with a notable difference. In the bridge pickup position, Fender has installed a humbucker pickup. This gives you more tonal difference than a standard Fender Strat, allowing a thicker sound.

The humbucker pickup is a stock installation in Gibson guitars, but in a Fender guitar a single coil pickup is typically installed. Combined with a single coil pickup and a solid ash or maple body, the Stratocaster has a brighter sound than a Gibson guitar. Gibson axes are more commonly built with a softer wood like mahogany or a combination of mahogany with a maple top.

By matching a humbucker pickup with a harder wood like maple, it opens you up to a lot more tonal diversity than playing a regular Fender Strat or Gibson guitar.

The Strat has a history of rock royalty players like Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Kurt Cobain. This Stratocaster HSS would be perfect for any player, from beginner to pro, to add to the collection.

Taylor Custom Giveaway

OK, here's a very special guitar contest - the chance to win a custom Taylor Grand Symphony guitar. I found this contest reading through the March 2010 issue of Guitar Player. This acoustic guitar comes out of Taylor's Build to Order program and was designed by Guitar Player Magazine journalist Art Thompson.

Art had the opportunity to spend two days in San Diego, California at Taylor Guitars to take part in the Build to Order program with an international group of journalists. In the end, they were each able to design their own guitar, choosing from 40 different options to make a unique instrument.

Of course, the purpose behind the exercise was to get the news out to the world about the Build to Order program, Taylor's custom shop for guitarists that can afford this kind of thing. Through the program, you have control over every aspect of the build, choosing the woods, inlays, hardware, finish and electronics.

The guitar Art designed incorporates Madagascar rosewood back and sides, and a redwood top that was cut from a log that had been submerged in a river for 150 years. It has a very understated beauty, with clean lines and grain patterns. What's nice about this contest is you get to throw your name into the hat to win this beauty.

Ok, I've been on the lookout for a cool new contest. Finally found one! Here's a chance to win a Gibson USA Sammy Hagar Red Rocker Les Paul - and an all expense paid trip to hang with Sammy in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico!

This Signature Red Rocker Les Paul is valued at $3900, according to Gibson's website. It features the prominent Chickenfoot Logo (from his current band) on the headstock. The neck and body are mahogany with a maple top. This is a pretty sharp axe - no pun intended. Sammy has been kind enough to autograph this beast.

That's an awesome prize in itself, but you get to head off to a resort in Mexico to chill with the Red Rocker himself. He's celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Cabo Wabo Cantina, Sammy's nightclub and restaurant.
